These are my commitments to you, and I will do my best to enforce these expectations in every aspect of my work in government:
Accountable to YOU
As an independent, I cannot be constrained by party rules, and will speak out on behalf of my constituents, no matter the issue.
Your MLA is a public servant, which means I want to be working for you. Your MLA should be accountable to their constituents before their party, yet all but two votes in the last four years were 100% within party lines. http://imagine-x.ca/votes is a website that has a fantastic tool that can show you how your current MLA votes. (Check out Vicki Huntington of Delta South, BC’s only independent and notice the difference.)
I will never accept corporate donations or financing. Your MLA should represent their constituents above all else; accepting $200,000 donations from investment groups or any other special interest groups is not acceptable.
As an independent, it is not my job to sell you on a party’s plan about what's best for you. My job is instead to sell your ideas and thoughts to them.
A good idea is a good idea. If what the parties are doing at any given time, is what the constituents of Columbia River-Revelstoke want, I will proudly support it. It is common to vote down bills and ideas simply because they are coming from a rival party, instead of based upon the content itself and it's effects on their constituents. This is simply bad practice and bad politics.
Win or lose, I would like to build a non-partisan advisory council made up of four committees, one from each of the major centers in the riding (Kimberley, Invermere, Golden, and Revelstoke.) These committees will help the MLA stay in touch across the massive area in our riding, no matter who that may be.
If I win, I plan to design an online forum for constituents to politely discuss, debate and participate in a non-binding vote to help me better understand the needs of our communities.
I want all constituents to know that they can reach out to me, and that I am here for them, ready and willing to listen and assist whenever possible.
I will lead by example, I will not participate in actions that I claim should be banned.
I will bring your concerns, questions, and ideas to the legislative assembly.
I will not support any bills that will give MLAs a raise in any form.
Transparency
It is your right to know what your MLA is doing to represent you. I promise to make this information accessible, so you will always know what I have voted, and why.
I will make all government documents and contracts that I am privy to, public, unless I am legally unable to, or it presents a security risk.
